Alcoholism and Alcohol Rehab in Yorkshire

Alcoholism:

Alcohol problems have been around for years. More recently there has been a huge increase in the number of people suffering from alcohol related issues. The NHS in Yorkshire have reported seeing more and more cases of liver damage. Worryingly, people are experiencing liver problems at a much younger age due to the nature of their drinking. In comparison to most products or activities, getting drunk has become cheaper and although this is not the sole reason for the levels of alcoholism in the Yorkshire area, it certainly makes alcohol far more available to young people.

Alcoholism is an illness. This is a concept which many people struggle to accept, but is a fact. It was first formally accepted as an illness in the 1950’s and has since been recognised by the World Health Organisation as an illness. Alcoholism not only affects the individual but the family, friends and loved ones. The person with the alcohol problem usually experiences varying levels of denial and will deny or minimise their drinking and the associated consequences. There are varying opinions as to the causes of alcoholism and alcohol problems. May believe that alcoholism is a genetic condition whilst others believe it is more of a learned behaviour. What is important however, is that alcoholism is an illness, and like most illnesses, it can be treated by an appropriate alcohol rehab.

Alcohol Rehab in Yorkshire:

There are various types of alcohol rehab although it is widely accepted that all reputable rehab centres run an abstinence based programme. Very often, the first stage of any alcohol rehab programme is ‘detox’. This is not always necessary, but the individual will undergo a medical assessment at the alcohol rehab centre on arrival to determine if alcohol detox is necessary. Alcohol detox ensures the safe and comfortable withdrawal from alcohol. Detoxing alone from alcohol without professional medical input can be very dangerous and in worst case, fatal. The detox process normally takes between 7 and 10 days. During this time the individual will engage in light therapeutic activities as part of the alcohol rehab.

Once the alcohol detox has been successfully completed, the alcohol rehab becomes more intensive. Daily sessions including one-one counselling, group therapy, workshops, assignments, alternative therapies, self-esteem groups, self-help groups and fun activities take place as part of an eclectic approach to the treatment of alcoholism. Most alcohol rehabs also offer family therapy as part of their rehab programme.

Alcohol rehab can vary in length but generally speaking they range from four weeks to six months. There are some detox centres that may offer detox only but this approach to alcohol dependence is very rarely successful.

Although alcohol rehab is often essential, the aftercare, on-going housing options and re-integration packages provided by the rehabilitation centre are also essential.

There are various alcohol rehab programmes in the UK although research demonstrates that by leaving your home area and going into rehab somewhere else, your chances of success are higher.
