Detox treatments in Suffolk
The Providence Projects are able to tailor a detox to suit your individual needs. We have been treating the people of Suffolk since 1996 with incredible success rates.
Detox from alcohol and drugs can be painful, dangerous, or at worst, fatal. Alcohol and drug addiction is not just a psychological and often requires medical intervention.
Unfortunately, in the last 15 years we have seen a rise in both alcohol and drug problems in Suffolk and have had to expand our services to cope with increasing demand.
Detox alone however does not give the individual the best chance of long term recovery. We strongly recommend a programme of therapy following on from the detox in order to address the underlying issues. All research demonstrates that this approach has much higher success rates than detox alone.
The detox process is different for each individual. Here are the most important facts about drug or alcohol detox.
Types of detox:
Alcohol Detox
When heavy or frequent drinkers suddenly decide to quit they will usually experience physical withdrawal symptoms -- which can range from the mildly annoying to severe and even life-threatening. The severity of these withdrawal symptoms is usually dependent upon how "chemically dependent" the chronic drinker has become. Those who drink heavily on a daily basis of course have developed a high level of dependency, but even those who drink daily, but not heavily and those who drink heavily but not daily, can also be chemically dependent upon alcohol.

Benzodiazepine Detox
Benzodiazepines describe a group of drugs commonly prescribed by GP’s although they can also be purchased on the ‘black market’ and off the internet. Most common types of benzodiazepines are valium (diazepam) and nitrazepam. These drugs are notoriously difficult to withdraw from and normally require a long detox depending on the amount one is taking and also the length of time for which one has taken them. Gradual reduction, with close monitoring is the most common method used. Here at The Providence Projects we have an extremely successful track record in weaning people off their benzo's in a safe and comfortable manner. Our success rate is second to none.

Cannabis Detox
Cannabis is the most widely used illegal substance in the UK. Over recent years the strength of cannabis has increased dramatically which in turn has caused a rise in the problems incurred by the user and their family.
In the past, there was common myth that cannabis was not addictive but this is clearly untrue and is in fact the fastest growing addiction we have seen. The stronger varieties of cannabis, including ‘skunk’ are now associated with dependence, paranoia, insomnia, psychosis, mood swings, lethargy, depression and violence. In fact, the list could go on and on.
Detox at The Providence Projects drug and alcohol rehab is designed to lower the anxiety, assist with sleep problems, reintroduce healthy eating as well as offering the much needed emotional and psychological support which on many occasions is as important as the medication itself. Most residents on a cannabis detox programme can expect to be on detox for up to 7 days.

Heroin Detox
Heroin and other opioids cause a strong physical dependence. This means that a person relies on the drug to prevent symptoms of withdrawal. Over time, greater amounts of the drug become necessary to produce the same effect. The time it takes to become physically dependent varies with each individual. When the drugs are stopped, the body needs time to recover, and withdrawal symptoms result. Withdrawal from opiates can occur whenever any chronic use is discontinued or reduced.

Methadone Detox
Methadone is prescribed by a medical professional or bought ‘on the street’. It is designed as an alternative to heroin and became hugely popular over the last 10 years due to the government’s drug strategy. Unfortunately methadone is highly dangerous and addictive. Most residents report more severe withdrawals from methadone than from heroin itself.
Detox from methadone is often extended for these reasons. The Providence Projects endeavor to ensure that the individual is as comfortable as possible during the detox process to ensure safety and success.

Subutex Detox
Buprenorphine, more commonly referred to as Subutex is also used by medical professionals as a form of ‘treatment’ for heroin addicts. Again, this can foster dependence and if used long-term cause serious health problems. It is not prescribed as commonly as methadone, normally for financial reasons but has become more common over recent years.
Detox from Subutex is quite simple and normally takes between 7 and ten days.
