What Is Addiction?

In society today a vast number of people suffer from a variety of addictions however most people imagine an addict or alcoholic to be homeless or a criminal but in most cases this is not true. The majority of people suffering from alcohol or drug dependency still have jobs or families although there are also those who have already lost these as a result of their addiction.

Addiction is often described in terms of someone having a physical compulsion and a mental obsession to drink and/or use drugs. This means that the addicted person experiences unusually strong cravings. It is common that the addicted person may well have tried to stop on several occasions but discovered that however strong their will power was, it was not strong enough to keep them permanently clean or sober.

What Do I Need To Do?

The decision to enter treatment for addiction is a huge step. It takes great courage to have an honest look at both yourself and the damage that your addiction has done to those close to you. At this stage you may still have many unanswered questions:

  • What is a detox and do I need one?
  • How long will treatment be?
  • How much will it cost?
  • What are the success rates?
  • Will I have my own room?
  • Is there any on-going support after I leave treatment?
