Reports out from the EU today suggest that children should not drink alcohol until they reach 18. In the UK it is common for families to introduce alcohol to teenage children so that they learn to drink safely, and in moderation. This report however claims that this approach is dangerous. Recent research carried out suggests that early exposure to alcohol increases the risk of developing an addiction or depression as well as altering the size and shape of the brain. Although we are not sure of the detail, we know that this can cause lasting effects on the brain.

The UK has one of the most serious alcohol problems in Europe signified by the alarming rise in liver disease amongst the under 30’s. Previously, these problems were only generally reported in the 40+ age group but every year the number of under 30’s diagnosed with liver disease is growing. Unfortunately, as the report points out, most research programmes and publications are funded by the alcohol industry and drinks companies who obviously have another agenda. For this reason the report also strongly suggests that the alcohol industry should be exiled from any influence on policy.
