Do we know how much alcohol we are drinking?

Research published this week by University College London has unearthed some frightening facts. After comparing alcohol sales in the UK against the amount of alcohol the public claim to consume, it has become apparent that half of all alcohol sold is essentially unaccounted for. There may be many reasons for this but the most likely explanation is that most drinkers don not keep track of how much they drink or are in denial about their dangerous levels of alcohol consumption. This research could mean that 75% of the nation are drinking above the recommended limit. The current guidelines advise that men should not regularly exceed 4 units per day and women should not exceed three units of alcohol daily. One unit of alcohol is approximately the equivalent to one small glass of wine or ½ pint of ordinary strength beer.

The growing cost of alcohol consumption in the UK is becoming a very serious problem. It is estimated that it costs the economy around £21 billion pounds per year and astonishingly 47% of violent crime is alcohol related.

The government continue to talk tough with regards to minimum pricing but for those who have a problem with alcohol and want real help in stopping there is very little good quality help available with more and more families having to access help privately.
