What a fabulous day. On Sunday September 11th, private alcohol and drug rehab, The Providence Projects celebrated its 20th birthday in true style. At the iconic Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth, on a glorious sunny day, ex-clients of The Providence Projects came from all over the UK and in fact the rest of the world to celebrate both their individual achievements, the success of The Providence Projects as well as catching up with old friends. As always seems to be the case, we were fortunate with the weather and people began to arrive as early as 10.30am. Many had travelled the day before to stay in Bournemouth and reminisce in a town where their drug or alcohol addiction treatment journey began. Cherill, Jon, Anita and Lou worked tirelessly on the front desk registering all guests. It really was special for all of us to see the size of the queue at registration. People congregated both in the main lobby and on the fabulous lawns, overlooking the beautiful beaches. There was a real buzz as old friends were reunited; the place was full of laughter and hugs and if you had to demonstrate what recovery is, it was certain on show here.
Louis was busy creating a video involving several ex-clients, whilst Debbie, in her usual fashion, was busily rushing around snapping away and there were several clients there from our very early years including Suzi, Angie, Nick, Jay and Davie. If ever proof was required that detox programmes work, it was here. By the time we added up the numbers at registration, we were blown away with nearly 400 registrations and 2000 years of abstinent recovery!!
During lunch, clients past and present mixed, chatted about their experiences and shared memories. It didn’t matter who you sat next to; it was like one big family.
After lunch, we heard from Paul Spanjar, our CEO who addressed the packed hall. There was not an empty seat in the glorious ballroom as everyone sat down for the afternoon’s speakers. Paul spoke about the progress that had been made over the last 20 years and the dedication and skill of the addiction counsellors and staff. He spoke about the passion and drive of the founders and the courage of all of those that have transformed their lives before introducing the speakers. He felt that the hardest part of the day was choosing who should speak as there were so many miracles, with so many incredible stories that a 3 day rehab reunion would be needed!!
Sandra, Christian, Peter and Naomi were chosen to speak about their time at Providence and their experience of recovery. All of them spoke wonderfully and showed great courage in getting on stage and speaking to a packed audience. Steve Spiegel also got up and addressed the audience. He spoke about the early days of Providence, the challenges we faced and the satisfaction and happiness he know feels when he looks back at the journey and the number of people who have transformed their lives. This was followed by a short speech from Dr Turnbull who has also been at The Providence Projects private rehab clinic since day 1.
The day was finished with an open mic session and a fabulous clean time countdown as the room filled with love and celebration as the day came to an end. The hotel remained busy for quite some time as people continued to catch up with old friends, not wanting to go home!
The Providence Projects residential rehab has turned 20 and would like to thank all of our ex-clients, families and supporters for helping us reach this incredible milestone.
