You may well have seen much publicity about cannabis in the news over recent weeks after the results of a 20 year study were published. There has been much written about this study but there are a few main findings which resonate strongly with us at The Providence Projects. So often, we receive calls from distressed parents about their son or daughter who is smoking cannabis on a daily basis. They regularly report the changes in personality, the changes in appearance, the changes in attitude and the breakdown of their relationship. More recently, we regularly hear about the angry outbursts when the cannabis smoker wants / needs more money to buy more of the drug.
The survey found that 1 in 6 will develop a cannabis dependence if they started to smoke during adolescence. This quashes the ‘cannabis is not addictive’ argument and demonstrates the risks associated with smoking cannabis in adolescence. The research went on to demonstrate the risk of cognitive impairment and the rise in the risk of psychosis and schizophrenia.
We know that the cannabis of today is stronger than the cannabis smoked of 20 years ago. We know that growing cannabis in the UK is becoming more and more common and hence more easily available. We, at The Providence Projects know more and more people are presenting for treatment with cannabis addiction.
