Cornwall now has a population well in excess of 500,000 and due to its location faces a range of difficult issues, which can be difficult to address. Cornwall is one of the poorest parts of the UK when considering average household incomes. Cornwall has a relatively high average age with 23% of its residents of pensionable age.

At The Providence Projects we see many clients from Cornwall and there really isn’t one ‘type’ of client. We have seen an increase in the number of over 60’s who have developed alcohol problems as

Alcohol in Cornwall

There are several different types of alcohol problem and every case is unique. However, we at The Providence Projects have identified some patterns in our rehab clients from Cornwall.

There has been an increase in the number of over 50’s with an alcohol problem. Drinking excessively at this stage of life can result in a range of health issues. The reason for this rise can be put down to a number of things. For some it is a loss of purpose or retirement; for others they find when their children leave home there is a void. In some instances, regular drinking slowly progresses over the years into something more problematic.

In the 18 – 50 year old category, we are seeing drinking at quite dangerous levels and often associated with depression or anxiety. Treatment often reveals self-esteem issues as well as other underlying factors resulting in the excessive drinking.

Drugs in Cornwall

Different parts of Cornwall have different patterns of drug use. We have recently treated people from Truro, Penzance, Newquay and Redruth areas. There appears to have been a steep rise in cannabis use. Although cannabis use is not problematic for everyone, due to the increasing strength of the cannabis, more and more people require help and find it difficult to quit drugs on their own.

Cocaine and ketamine are also a common problem. What often starts as a fun party drug ends up in a loss of control, resulting in a set of problems including finance problems, work issues, relationship problems and often poor mental health.

Detox, rehab and addiction treatment at The Providence Projects

Most people that we have treated from Cornwall have tried a host of tactics to stop or control their addiction before seeking help. Some try to limit their drinking or using to evenings or weekends; not drinking spirits; only socialising with certain people; joining a gym; and a range of other attempts to stop or control.

When these have not worked, people seek professional help. The Providence Projects can provide both rehabilitation programmes for alcohol or drugs.

Before the rehab programme starts, individuals are assessed on the telephone so that we can note down important information regarding:

  • General health
  • Quantities and frequency of drinking or using
  • Any other mental health issues
  • Exactly what the individual wants from rehab

We can then explain exactly what our drug and alcohol rehab can offer. This means that you can find the right treatment match for your problem.

Once the assessment has been completed, admissions can be arranged immediately or on an agreed date. Individuals are provided with a list of what to bring and on arrival and will be assessed by one of the superb Doctors at The Providence Surgery as part of their induction. During this consultation, a detox regime, if required, will be agreed.

You then embark on a rehab programme which can range from 2 – 12 weeks, depending on your requirements, to help you address possible underlying issues and develop the skills to stay sober. The good news is, as you will see on our Facebook page, it has worked for so many others; it can work for you too.

Is private rehab affordable?

For so many the important question is; ‘Can I afford it?’

As you may have seen from your research, detox and rehab can be expensive and there are a range of centres for you to consider in the South West of England. It is essential to find the alcohol or drug rehab centre which is both appropriate for you and affordable.

Rehab centres can vary in price quite dramatically and there are options locally and further afield. In the South and South West of England, there are several options ranging from your local authority funded centre to The Priory. The local authority centre near you tends to have strict eligibility criteria and possibly long waiting lists. Unfortunately, funding for drug rehabilitation has been cut drastically in recent years, meaning provision is often inadequate. At the other end of the scale, a 28 day programme at The Priory is currently available for £20,000.

It is rarely necessary to spend £20,000 and spending more certainly doesn’t mean the quality is better. At The Providence Projects we have tried to ensure the programmes here remain as affordable as possible, with the comprehensive programme available for £4,950. Whilst this is still a considerable sum of money, it does mean that private rehab costs are affordable.

Help for addiction in Cornwall

If you are living in Cornwall, whether that be Truro, Penzance, Redruth, Newquay or St Ives, you should have access to a range of counselling and group sessions. The services available to you will depend on your exact location. If you are unsure of where to start there are a few options. In this section, we will outline some of the community services available in Cornwall. Please remember that you may be able to get some support or advice from your GP. They will not however be able to refer into residential rehab if that is what you require.

As well as these services, there are ’12 step’ meetings. 12 step meetings are a great free resource in Cornwall. Some people credit 12 step meetings in saving their life, whilst others simply don’t find them useful. Whichever part of Cornwall you live in, there will be a range of meetings available.

There are a range of ’12 step fellowships’ but the two largest are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous and we have put together a list of just some of the meetings open to you.

The cost of rehab in Cornwall: affordable or expensive?

Considering the size of the county of Cornwall there are relatively few options for detox and rehab. There are currently only two local authority funded centres. They do have clear eligibility criteria and often long waiting times depending on your circumstances.

Privately, there is even less choice! Those from Cornwall, Penzance, Truro and surrounding areas generally leave the county when looking for private detox and rehab programmes. Over recent years, more options have become available to those who have an alcohol or drug problem and treatment is available at a more affordable price privately than ever before.

In the past, expensive private hospitals were the only real choice. They would often charge in excess of £4,000 per week for a detox and rehab programme. For the majority of people this is simply unaffordable.

There are now entire programmes available for the cost of a week there in which you can fully detox and address the underlying issues of your addiction. Our team of advisors are available to talk you through the options available from 8am until 10pm 7 days a week.

What is the right rehab for me?

The nature of your drug alcohol, or gambling problem will determine the right intervention for you. For example, a binge drinker who is employed and part of a safe family unit would often require a different intervention to someone who is homeless and using Class A drugs. Someone who is addicted to prescription drugs will require a different approach to detox to someone who is using cocaine.

There are however general rules that apply regardless of your alcohol or drug problem. It is always important to ensure the rehabilitation centre you choose is well established, affordable and carries out full assessment before offering you a place or taking any money.
At The Providence Projects, there are a team of addiction specialists who can help you decide your next step.
