Helping you Understand
Detox describes the process facilitating a safe withdrawal from drugs or alcohol. Withdrawal from drugs or alcohol can be uncomfortable, distressing or in some cases dangerous. Hence the need for medical intervention.
There is not a set length of time for detox as the medication you require to detox may depend on a variety of factors including how long you have been drinking or using for, the level of your dependence and the substances which you may be using.
Any client that comes to The Providence Projects, will see an addiction specialist GP at The Providence Surgery on the day of their admission. All Doctors at The Providence Surgery specialise in both detox and substance misuse. After consultation, you will be prescribed an appropriate course of medication to ensure safe withdrawal. During this stage you will be monitored by the team at The Providence Projects with access to the prescribing doctor when required.
However, for most people with an alcohol or drug issue, stopping is not the problem; the problem is staying stopped. With this in mind, The Providence Projects do not offer a stand-alone detox service but a full rehab programme which includes detox when necessary. All of the latest evidence demonstrates that detox on it’s own is very rarely successful in the long term and we therefore have designed an intensive 28 day programme which incorporates a full therapy programme.
The Providence Surgery is the most experienced group of substance misuse GP’s in the South of England and has been awarded an Outstanding Rating by CQC.
